Microsoft Dynamics 365 ERP Hosting

Microsoft Dynamics 365 platform has multiple ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems, such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. These can be deployed in different ways: on the Cloud, on Azure (Personal Cloud), on Premises (On-Prem.). This post briefly discusses each of these options.

1. The Cloud
This deployment option is also referred to as “True Cloud” and “SaaS” (software as a service).

Pros Cons
  • $0 upfront cost
  • Always up-to-date
  • Enhanced connectivity with other Cloud services
  • No direct access to SQL
  • Extra storage at extra cost
  • Limited additional security options
Good for the companies that want to save on the initial implementation or those that prefer to maintain all their software on the Cloud

2. Azure
This deployment option is sometimes referred to as “Personal Cloud”.

Pros Cons
  • No hardware cost
  • Direct access to SQL
  • Ability to install additional security and other software
  • Higher upfront and monthly cost
  • Need for ERP upgrades
  • Reduced system performance with cheaper Azure supscription
Good for the companies that do not wish to maintain their own hardware, but would like more control over their data via direct access to SQL

3. On Premises
This deployment option is usually referred to as “On-Prem.”.

Pros Cons
  • Ability to control the dedicated hardware and software resources
  • No additional cost (except hardware) to increase storage
  • Increased stability of the system due to the ability to control when/if to install updates
  • Highest upfront cost
  • Need for ERP upgrades
  • Reduced or more complicated connectivity to Cloud services and fewer features
Good for the companies that do not wish to maintain their own hardware, but would like more control over their data via direct access to SQL
